This was one of the greatest games (if you’re a Barça fan) in recent memory – it came at a nailbiting point in the season and, although Barcelona were 4 points clear, you had the feeling that whoever won the game would go on to win La Liga.

So when Higuain put Real Madrid 1-0 up in min 13, all the cules’ hearts were in their mouths. Four minutes later Thierry Henry equalised, the Great Captain Puyol scored in the 20th and then Argentinian genius Leo Messi in the 35th. So Barça went into the break 3-1 up and bottles of cava were being cracked open on the Ramblas of Barcelona.

In the second half Sergio Ramos got one back for the Madridistas in min 55 but then the Barça festival began.

Three more goals – Henry 57′, Messi 74′ and a much celebrated goal from young Gerard Pique in Min 82 and the Final Score was an incredible Real Madrid 2 FC Barcelona 6.

Real Madrid never really recovered and Barcelona went on to have the best season in their history winning Copa del Rey, Liga and Champions League.

2009-10 is another season, though, and with star signings Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Benzema and Xabi Alonso, Real Madrid will be out for revenge.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s First Goal For FC Barcelona – Sporting Gijon 3-0

Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s First Goal For FC Barcelona came against Sporting de Gijon.

Alves crosses, Sporting defender Gregory brushes the ball with his head,  Zlatan heads it in Barça’s third goal of the evening.

You don’t see it on the video but his celebration was pretty serious – it’s obvious that he was relieved to get his first goal for Barça.

FC Barcelona vs Athletic Bilbao 3-0 Spanish Super Cup 23-8-09

This was a pretty comfortable win for Barça -Messi 2 goals and Bojan 1 goal. They’d won the first leg 2-1 and Athletic had to play in the qualifying rounds of the Europa League against Tromso.

Caparrós knew where his priorities lay and gave his big guns a night off. All merit to Barça though and Athletic qualified, by the way.

FC Barcelona vs Manchester City 0-1 Joan Gamper 19-08-09

The highlights of Manchester City’s 0-1 victory over Barcelona in the club’s Joan Gamper pre-season trophy.

It wasn’t a fantastic game because Barça were much less worried about winning than city were. The Blaugrana had already competed in the Spanish SuperCup and were thinking ahead to the European one and the start of La Liga, so Pep continued with his experiments and used a lot of the reserve and youth players. Most of the theoretical first team had a bit of a run about and Zlatan Ibrahimovic made his debut without much luck. Barça still played like Barça and the result was of little importance.

For City, however, after investing so much money, beating the reigning European Champions gave them a definite moral boost and I’m sure Mark Hughes smiled to himself when he thought of his unsuccessful period at Camp Nou under Terry Venables back in the late 1980s.

Barcelona – Shakhtar Donetsk 1:0 UEFA Super Cup 28-09-2009

It’s the name that goes on the trophy that counts but this was a pretty frustrating game until a 115th-minute goal from substitute Pedro Rodríguez (isn’t he a promising player?) finally ended the resistance of FC Shakhtar Donetsk and gave FC Barcelona a third UEFA Super Cup triumph in Monaco.

It was also the first time that we got a proper look at Chygrynskiy. I must admit, I wasn’t at all convinced but it must have been strange playing the last game for Shaktar knowing he’d be a Barça player the next day.

FC Barcelona 6 – Malaga CF 0 highlights 22/3/09

Barça went on a goal rampage again, and this time the victims were Malaga – they were already behind 4-0 at half time.

Xavi, Messi, Henry, Etoo (2) and Alves were the scorers, and the league leaders held on to their six-point advantage.

The match lasted the obligatory 90 minutes but it was already over at half-time. The message given out by Barça even when it was still 0-0 was one of impending doom for Malaga, and it turned out to be a one-man-show as Barça proceeded to totally overrun a stunned Malaga.

It was also a festival of goals, with Xavi, Messi, Henry, Etoo (2) and Alves showing their talent in a great all-round display by the team. With this result, FC Barcelona arrived at the short break in the league holding on to their six-point advantage over Real Madrid with 30 points still to play for.

Defence breaks down in the 18th minute

Barça began the game with all the possession, moves and pressure, with Malaga on the defence from the outset. Few teams survive in Nou Camp playing that way.

Iniesta and Henry looked threatening but Malaga’s defensive block wasn’t broken down till the 18th minute with Etoo setting up the first Barça goal for Xavi, who had scored twice in La Rosaleda back in November.

Messi gets a scorcher

Being one down, Malaga should have turned up the pressure, but instead it was Barça who carried on going for goal. Messi got the second after a brilliant individual move down the right where he left Nacho and Hélder Rosario on the floor before beating Goitía with an amazing right-footed shot. Immediately after the celebrations, Touré, obviously in pain, was substituted by Keita.

Xavi lays on the goals

Barça had the taste for more goals in their mouths, just as they had against Atlético, Almería and Valladolid. Xavi now played the role of facilitator, first setting up Henrys goal (where he beat Goitia in a one-on-one in the 31st minute), then setting up Etoos first in the 42nd minute.
Xavi laid them on, the strikers scored and the fans were happy, and then a beautiful first half came to an end.

Show-time

Barças one-man-show resumed after half-time, and in the 50th minute an unmarked Alves headed home a pass from Iniesta. The fans went mad, but the show still wasnt over. Six minutes later Henry set Etoo up in the six-yard box, and the Cameroon player didnt fail to deliver. Amazing! Later on in the half, an injured Iniesta was substituted by Gudjohnsen, and the youngster Bojan came on for Xavi. Then the show was over.
